Global Xperience Goes Bust, Real Gap Steps In
Global Xperience, U.K. gap-year travel company that places travelers on volunteer and adventure trips around the world, has gone bust – a victim of the recession. About 163 young people on placements across the globe were given the news by letter and email, The Independent revealed.
As a result of bankruptcy, Global Xperience can not fulfill its customers’ booking obligations. Richard Oliver of Year Out Group, a trade association group, said of the demise of Global Xperience: “It is not a straightforward credit crunch story but the credit crunch was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Several hundred people had made future bookings and paid deposits to the company and would have to claim their cash back from the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).” Global Xperience customers should contact ABTA on 01243 621 500 or email email@example.com. Customers will receive a refund, which could take up to six weeks.
Another travel company, Real Gap, has purchased the right to run programs originally set up by Global Xperience. David Stitt, managing director of Real Gap, said: “We can supply the programs they have booked or offer them a very suitable alternative. He added: “As part of TUI Travel PLC (Activity Sector Division), we have the backing of a secure parent company. We cannot stress enough the importance of fully researching any company with whom you book travel though, especially in light of what has happened to some unfortunate Global Xperience customers.”
Global Xperience is the first major casualty from the volunteer travel sector attributed to the recession. Will there be more?
